Science and Environmental Education

National Curriculum
Each of the scientific units encourages pupils to make hypothesis, engage in practical investigations and to reach informed conclusions. Visiting local sites of scientific interest can extend investigation. In addition the Centre offers study opportunities for GCSE and AS levels.

Allotment Sessions Run from Feb through to October.

These sessions give pupils the chance to get their hands dirty and be really involved with actually growing plants. At harvest time we try to give pupils a taste what we have grown too.

This the session links in well very with the life and living processes part of the national curriculum. Depending on year group it can cover keys, micro organisms, food chains and sustainability as well as finding out all about plants.

Environmental Art – New For 2010 – School Led

A fun session which manages to mix making art in the environment with a bit of team building and sustainability education! Following a simple to use lesson plan teachers and pupils will work together to make art work in the environment, go on a scavenger hunt and plan and make a small piece of art work to take home. Even the less creative children really enjoy this session.

Habitat Comparison

We have a good look at the creatures and plants in the pond and woods and see how they are adapted to living in two different habitats. Both habitats are teaming with life and we work hard to make sure that even the more nervous children gain confidence and enjoy getting up close to the creatures.

Food Chains and Habitat Comparison

This activity gives pupils a real chance to get involved and explore wildlife in the pond and woods whilst finding out about adaptation, keys and food chains. The session is designed to fit in with the national curriculum and aimed at KS2 but can be adapted to suit KS1. This is an ideal SATS revision session.

Life Cycles and Habitat Comparison

Similar to the Food Chains and Habitats but this time the emphasis is on life cycles.

Each of these is a half day activity run for the whole class.
