Ty'n y Berth Mountain Centres  - The Courses - Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The Location

Nestling at the foot of Cadair Idris, close to the Dyfi and Mawddach Estuaries, Ty'n y Berth is in a fantastic location from which to run expeditions and explorations at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. The coastal and estuary paths offer inspiring routes for bronze level routes. The hills and open valley above the seaside town of Tywyn provide a feeling of remoteness for silver, and the ridges of Cadair Idris and the Rhinogau present participants with challenging gold routes.
Training, Practice or Qualifying Ventures

Ty'n y Berths qualified and experienced staff can provide all the technical expertise and specialist equipment to make your student's expeditions section of the award flow smoothly and enjoyably. Staff qualifications include mountain instructors, mountain leaders, and accredited assessors.

The Programme - Gold

Preparation begins 10 weeks or so before the expedition. Campsites and start and finish points which are suitable. 6 weeks before the venture, route cards and tracings are forwarded to the centre where they will be checked by our staff and comments and suggestions returned to you.

Upon arrival at the centre, students can collect any equipment they require from our stores and finalise route planning. Day 2 is an acclimatisation day, which consists of an easy day-walk. This affords opportunities for students to try out their kit and get to know Centre staff a little. It also provides staff with an insight into participant's skills and abilities, particularly navigation.

Days 3,4, 5 and 6 are spent on expedition. Students are remotely supervised, being met en-route by our staff as conditions dictate. Each group will always be checked at their campsites which will be on remote hillside sites, or small valley campsites.

Silver

At Sliver level the best programme follows the gold programme but is a day shorter. The 2nd day is often shorter with participants being given extra training in camp-craft and the safe use of stoves. For suitable participants who have received appropriate training, routes can be arranged to take in wild country areas which forms a valuable stepping stone particularly for those participants wishing to undertake their gold expedition abroad.

Bronze

At bronze level, the expedition terrain is a lot gentler, yet still provides valuable opportunities for participants to be challenged by undertaking of a self sufficient journey. The expedition can be combined with 1 or 2 further days which can include training in navigation and campcraft skills, or the chance to participate in a range of adventurous activities such as rock climbing, gorge or mine exploration.
Courses for DofE Leaders

The Centre provides a fantastic training venue for adults. Whether for a generic training weekend, Walking Groups leader or Mountain Leader Training or Assessment Courses.
Something Different

Explorations can also be run from the Centre. Whether students opt for detailed scientific studies of the local environment, tracing the history of slate mining or Owain Glyndwr, or simply recording their journey in watercolour, Ty'n y Berth can help.

Staff at Ty'n y Berth have many years experience of running courses and expeditions in other areas of Britain and abroad. Whether you would prefer the highlands of Scotland or the sun-kissed Pyrenees, we can organise the whole package for you.
