Below is a list of our exciting new events for 2012 -
Fool's Errand 1st April 2012
Widehorizons presents The Fool's Errand Sportive. A spectacular 120km Sportive on 1st April 2012. All proceeds from the event will be used by Widehorizons to fund our work providing life-changing adventure to children and young people. The event will start at one of our centres and pass by another, giving you the chance to see the amazing places that we use to inspire and educate young people from, mostly, south-east London. If you would like to know more about the work of Widehorizons, please contact Alex Brooks-Johnson, Director of Fundraising and Marketing.
Bring the family!
We hope that our first Sportive will become a firm fixture in your family calendar. As an added extra, we will be providing a range of our activities for children of participants completely free. There will be something for all ages, from wildlife spotting for younger children to climbing for the older ones, there'll be a chance to try our obstacle course and give archery a go; giving a real flavour of what Widehorizons does as a charity. We'll send out details to registered participants on March 1st so you can book places, which will be limited. Children under 12 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
Course Description
The Fool's Errand Sportive starts and finishes at Margaret McMillan House on the top of the North Downs and is mostly on quiet country lanes and roads through the spectacularly beautiful countryside and picturesque villages of Kent. With the first shoots of spring appearing there couldn't be a better time to see the glorious sweeping valley views, green hills and distant horizons. The route itself is a challenging 120k with 1500 metres of climbing. Heading first south-east into the rolling hills along the Medway valley it then turns west onto a fast, undulating stretch across the Kent Weald before taking you north past Bough Beech reservoir and up the notorious Toys Hill. Sweeping down again into theWesterham Valley the route then turns east to Otford and the tough climb up Rowdow. After a gentle descent into the Darenth Valley, the route heads towards the finish with some short, sharp climbs back to the start on top of the North Downs. One feed/toilet stop around the 70k mark and a water/toilet stop 20k before the end. Ample parking, accommodation and hot food available before and after the event. Rail connections nearby.
