GCSE & A-level PE

The Location

Nestling at the foot of Cadair Idris, close to the Dyfi and Mawddach Estuaries, Ty'n y Berth is in a fantastic location for delivering both taught and assessed elements of GCSE, AS and A2 Mountain Walking elements of the Physical Education syllabus The terrain of the coastal and estuary paths contrast with the hills and ridges of Cadair Idris and the Rhinogau to present students with challenging and varied routes.

Training

Ty'n y Berths qualified and experienced staff can provide all the technical expertise and specialist equipment to deliver the taught elements of your syllabus. The staff team includes qualified teachers in PE or OE, and all have National Governing Body Awards in mountain instruction and mountain leadership.

The Programme

Programmes are best delivered in a collaborative way. You know your students and their capabilities, we know the campsites, routes and terrain of the local environment. Depending on the syllabus, and the level of examination, programmes can vary between a 2 day assessment to a 6 day combined training and assessment.

Depending on the syllabus and level, the programme can be wholly Centre based, include 1 nights camp, or an expedition of up to 3 days in length. Courses can include lectures and theory sessions, or be wholly practical with all theory delivered in school/college prior to the course.

GCSE

A typical GCSE programme will often include a selection of adventurous activities, but concentrate on those which include navigation, movement skills and other skills relevant to the chosen area of assessment. Although not required by most syllabi, the course can include an overnight camp or overnight bivvy.

AS

Depending on your chosen syllabus, an AS programme will include 2-3 days training, followed by a day dedicated to assessment. There is of course scope for continual assessment to be used throughout the week to enable students to gain the maximum mark possible. AS course can include another adventurous activity as a non assessed element. Some groups elect to include a nights camp or overnight bivvy.

A-Level (A2)

Following 1 or 2 days training, past courses have included a 4 day, 3 night unaccompanied expedition. This puts students fully in charge of their own learning, and into a situation where they have to apply all of their acquired skills to complete the journey. Expeditions are remotely supervised with students being shadowed, met at check points en-route, or spied upon from afar! Groups are always checked into their campsite each evening.

Rock Climbing

The area provides good opportunities for students to progress with both the technical and athletic skills needed in the sport of rock climbing. At GCSE, students need no prior experience. At AS & A-level, students need to have some previous climbing experience.
Orienteering

With permanent courses set up in the forests at both of our Centres, and several others within half an hours drive, orienteering is a good option for GCSE students. The course will provide opportunities for students to experience various terrain including mountain & Mooreland as well as forest..

Courses for Teachers & Lecturers

Ty'n y Berth can deliver training and assessment courses for staff teaching adventurous activities at school. Walking Group Leader, Mountain Leader and Single Pitch Award courses can all be run from the Centre. As an organisation, we can also provide in service training for educational visits and first aid.
