Rock Climbing Either on the sea cliffs at Tonfanau, or high above the coastal town of Barmouth, rock climbing provides a unique opportunity for students to work together to achieve and surpass their expectations. During full day sessions, students can develop their technical climbing skills, the day could also include an abseil. Rock climbing is a great activity for developing trust and building self confidence.

Gorge Walking Climb, scramble, wriggle, slide and splash your way up and alongside the bed of a steep sided river. This is an excellent activity for team building and encouraging students to help and support each other. For older groups, we have the option of a slightly more demanding wet gorge. This is a half day activity.

Mountain/Hill Walking The summit of Cadair Idris is a challenging day out for all. Team working and encouragement are some of the skills required to enable a successful summit attempt. Planning, map reading and navigation are also skills that can be developed. A winter traverse of a mountain makes for a particularly memorable experience. Other less demanding routes are available for full or half day walks.

Mine Exploration A truly memorable experience. A trip through a mine will often involve the use of ropes to assist moving safely up and down between different levels. This activity helps to develop confidence and self reliance as well as an appreciation of the need to mutually support each other. An underground abseil adds to the feeling of adventure and commitment. This activity takes between half and two thirds of a day.

Orienteering There are permanent orienteering courses set up in the forests at both Centres. Following a briefing, students work in pairs to navigate through the forest using maps. An element of competition can be introduced to provide students with opportunities for self motivation. Half day session.

Low Ropes Course Communication, Problem Solving Leadership and Teamwork are some of the key-skills required for our ropes courses. Ropes, balance beams, swings and tyres ensure that teams are sufficiently challenged. Add to this a bucket full of water, and you have an activity which becomes a tremendous amount of fun! A half day activity which can be combined with the swamp trail at TYB.

Night Walk One of the student's favourite activities. Usually undertaken on the evening of your first day, with the added bonus of at least some darkness outside the summer months. A great opportunity to journey through local forests or past ruined villages and deserted farmhouses. There are various route options, and plenty of opportunities to get wet and muddy, should you wish!

Camping and Expeditions Self reliance, perseverance and commitment are some of the skills required to complete a self sufficient journey and to survive a night in the Welsh hills. Students are also given opportunities to appreciate and understand the natural environment and landscapes that they pass through. This activity takes one and a half days or longer.

Field Studies The local environment offers fantastic opportunities for field studies for GCSE and A-level. We can cover a wide variety of topics from the Geography and Biology curricular. Groups often choose to combine exam work with a day or two of activities. Areas of study could include: Glaciation, Rivers, Forests, Sand dunes and contrasting localities. |

Pony Trekking An additional extra. After initial tuition, watch how student's confidence visibly grows, as they develop the skills necessary riding skills. Riding affords a unique perspective on the environment which the students travel through, and to many students, a strong bond is built between them and their horse.
