The Green City Challenge is our brand new adventure through South-East London that promises to show you some of the best hidden pockets of green space and parkland that the area has to offer. Get ready to discover historical secrets at SevernDroog Castle and the Lesnes Abbey ruins and enjoy stunning views across the Thames path.

Trek or run a Marathon, Half Marathon or 5 mile adventure across Greenwich and discover London’s hidden green side as you venture through forest and woodland paths, whilst making your challenge as relaxed or as hardcore as you want to with our route choices. Read on to find out exactly why you should make sure the Green City Challenge is set in your 2018 diary!

The Green City Challenge takes place on Saturday 23rd June 2018. There are three route options, all of which are circular routes, starting and finishing at our Environment Centre in Eltham.

The Full Marathon (26.2 miles)(£10 registration fee or £5 for under 18s and then aim to raise a maximum of £100 per person or £50 for under 18s): A circular route starting and finishing at Wide Horizons Environment Centre, Eltham which leads you along some of the most beautiful green spaces in the city and along the spectacular Thames path to Greenwich before returning to Eltham.

The Half Marathon (13.1 miles)(£10 registration fee or £5 for under 18s and then aim to raise a minimum of £100 per person or £50 for under 18s): Starting and ending at Wide Horizons Environment Centre, Eltham this route winds though the stunning hidden parks in Greenwich and Bexley.

The BIG 5 Adventure (5 miles) (£5 registration fee or £2.50 for under 18s and then aim to raise £50 per person or £25 for under 18s): Starting at Wide Horizons Environment Centre, Eltham, enjoy a circular route that takes you through picturesque parkland and woods and past amazing buildings and even a castle before returning to the finish line.

And the adventure doesn’t end when you have completed your challenge as our Environment Centre will be hosting a variety of activities for you and your enthusiastic army of volunteers to get stuck into! From a Gruffalo hunt and pond dipping to eco art and fire lighting as well as a BBQ, there will be plenty happening to help you celebrate.

If you work for or are part of a school or social housing organisation, then the funds you raise can be ring fenced to provide adventure to your school or community.

Fundraising for your school

We encourage you to include the whole community of your school – teachers, students, governors, parents, friends and family – to take part in this unique event to raise funds for your adventure programmes with Wide Horizons. All the money you raise will go directly towards your school programme with Wide Horizons, giving your children the opportunity to grow and develop through adventure learning experiences whether that’s exploring a river, climbing a mountain or even going on a bear hunt!

Fundraising for your community programmes

We invite Social Housing organisation’s – employees, friends and family – to take part in this unique event to raise funds for adventure programmes with Wide Horizons that support children and families in your community. All the money you raise will go towards a bespoke Wide Horizons programme, directly supporting tenants and residents in your community to experience life changing adventures building stronger and more cohesive communities while equipping young people with the personal and social skills needed to help fulfil their potential Recruit a team of colleagues, friends and family and sign up now to unearth your sense of adventure with this exhilarating challenge!
