Here at Horton Kirby we are passionate about encouraging a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way of living.

We have implemented lots of measures around the centre to reduce the impact of the centre on the environment such as waste and energy management, habitats enhancement strategies and education courses designed to educate others. We also like to encourage all of our visitors to help out during their visit by doing things such as reducing and recycling their waste

Sustainable schools

A visit to Horton Kirby links well with the Government’s Sustainable Schools strategy which outlines how schools can start their journey towards becoming sustainable and encourages them to  take on board the principles of sustainable development across all aspects of school life.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020 and believes schools play a vital part in developing the skills children need to lead sustainable lives

Many of the programmes we offer here at the centre link directly to the 8 doorways to sustainability such as our waste and pollution days (for more information on how specific programmes link please look at the activities section of our website and download the lesson outlines).

However even if you are not taking part in a programme that links directly to the sustainable schools agenda a visit to Horton Kirby is a good opportunity for you and your class to pick up ideas and inspiration on things that you could do back at school to improve your school environment. Our environmental policy (which can be downloaded from this page) outlines all of the things that we have implemented around the centre to improve our own sustainability.
