Our Service

Here at Horton Kirby we aim to enrich the curriculum offered by schools in a natural environment and to provide safe affordable, enjoyable educational opportunities.

We have number of tried and tested  programmes to suit Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 groups which cover many of the main geography, history and science topics. All of our programmes support the National Curriculum in a fun and interesting way. To find out more about our programmes please look at the 'activities' section of this webiste.

We pride ourselves on making all areas of your school visit as easy & hassle free as possible. We offer many services to help with your pre visit planning such as risk assessements, pre & post visit resources, free pre-visits to the centre & booking the transport for your visit. During your day with us each class will have their own dedicated tutor for the day who will lead all of the activities and provide all of the equipment needed on the day, each class will also have their own indoor space to leave coats / bags etc.

The centre is subsidised by Lewisham & Greenwich Councils to offer outdoor education programmes to Lewisham & Greenwich Schools at a reduced rate.  However schools from other areas are very welcome at the centre too. For details on how to book a visit please visit the 'bookings' section of this webiste

Main Building

The main Centre building consists of 3 classrooms, each is fully equipped and with it's own interactive whiteboard and projector.

The classrooms have a maximium capacity of 32 students and are all fully equipped for a variety of different topics.  The Centre building also houses a hand washing room, toilets, kitchen, library area and offices.

Playground

The Centre has a playground which is used for playtimes and for some of our on-site activities. There is an additional area where children can sit quietly under the shade of the beech tree. The playground overlooks the allotments, where a wide variety of fruit and vegetables are grown.

In the playground we have a brick WW2 air raid shelter. Half of the shelter is used for storing spare coats, wellingtons and our kiln, whilst the other half is used for our WW2 Evacuee Day.

Grounds

In addition to the playground at the rear of the Centre, there is a garden area at the front of the Centre. It is mainly laid to lawns with a variety of flowers and shrubs. The shade of the trees is very welcome in the summer months when visiting groups can picnic outside.

To the rear of the playground is the Centre's allotment and wildlife area.  The wildlife area has many features such as logs, long grass and two small ponds which make it a fantastic place to look for minibeasts.
