Orienteering involves participants using maps to find their way around a course, locating markers along the way. There are permanent line event orienteering courses set up in the forests at both centres, which can be made longer, shorter, more difficult or easier depending on the age and ability of the group. It is also possible to vary the way in which the activity works, for example by running a star event for younger, less experienced children, or a score or team event for older students or adults. |

Following an initial briefing, participants set off to find the markers using their maps and their brains! Pupils can work in pairs or small teams, and can be accompanied by a member of staff if necessary.
The supervision systems that staff employ mean that children can be let off the lead, and feel that they are alone in the forest, although members of staff will always be close at hand to provide assistance where necessary. |

There are also short orienteering courses within the grounds at both centres. These can be used as training exercises prior to tackling a longer course, or as a separate activity, pehaps led by visiting staff the evening before.
There is a large, permanent orienteering course set up in a nearby forest, Coed y Brenin. This is suitable for more experienced orienteers, perhaps as part of GCSE PE. |
