Ty'n y Berth Mountain Centres  - Courses for Primary Schools

The Programme

Your course will be designed with your specific requirements in mind. Choose from a selection of whole or half day activities. These are just some of the experiences available to you.

Rock Climbing
Either on the sea cliffs at Tonfanau, or high above the coastal town of Barmouth, rock climbing provides a unique opportunity for students to work together and achieve much more than their expectations. At either venue, an activity appropriate to the children's abilities will be provided. Choose either a half or whole day.

Gorge Walking
Climb, scramble, wriggle, slide and splash your way up and alongside the bed of a steep sided river. This is an excellent activity for team building and encouraging children to help and support each other. This is a half day activity and combines well with other activities close to the Centre.

Mountain/Hill Walking
It's not just about getting to the top! Determination, Motivation and Co-operation are some of the skills needed here. There are many Mountain and Hill walking routes in the area. Choose between the gentle, yet visually stunning precipice walk, or venture higher harder and steeper onto the lower slopes of Cadair Idris.

Orienteering
This activity provides children with a great sense of what it feels like to be alone in the Forests of Wales! (Carefully supervised of course!) We have permanent orienteering courses set up in the forests at both Centres. These can be made longer, shorter, easier or more difficult depending on the ability of the group. This is a half day activity

Mine Exploration
The area has many old slate mines which provide fascinating places to explore. For primary groups, we recommend the use of a mine called Minllyn. It consists of several large chambers linked by smaller tunnels. Children navigate the way around the mine, following a photo trail, whilst investigating the remains of Victorian mining equipment.

Low Ropes Courses
A problem solving activity requiring balance, communication and lots of co-operation. Ropes, balance beams, swings and tyres are among the obstacles which the children must negotiate there way across. Add to this a bucket full of water, and you have an activity which becomes a tremendous amount of fun! Half day activity.

Beaches and Rock Pools
Such a simple, yet enjoyable and informative activity. Children simply explore pools left on the beach by the retreating tide. Emphasis is placed on conservation and the importance of not harming living creatures. Buckets, nets and identification keys aid the children with their discoveries. Combines very well with a half day rock climbing session subject to tidal conditions.

Goldmine & Waterfall Walk
A very popular half day walk for less physically able groups, or, because of its sheltered nature, during bad weather. Walk past 2 spectacular waterfalls, ruined mine buildings and along a track littered with gold!...well it could be!

Pony Trekking
An additional extra. Ride on horseback through fields and anto the beach. Watch children's confidence visibly grow, as they develop the skills necessary to steer, stop and encourage their pony. Half day activity, contact the centre for current prices.

Night Walk
One of the children's favourite activities. Usually undertaken on the evening of your first day, with the added bonus of at least some darkness outside the summer months. A great opportunity to journey through local forests or past ruined villages and deserted farmhouses. There are various route options, and plenty of opportunities to get wet and muddy, …should you wish!

Trips, Studies & Visits
A Village Study, visit to the local Craft Centre, or the Centre for Alternative Technology are just some of the alternative options available to you. Many schools chose visits or studies which compliment the classroom curriculum. Contact the centre for more information.
