About Widehorizons Outdoor Education Trust

Our mission is to improve the lives of all who learn, work and live in our community through inspiring outdoor experiences.

Widehorizons Outdoor Education Trust is a new Trust formed in 2004 as a result of a joint initiative on the part of the London councils of Greenwich and Lewisham to find imaginative ways of breathing new life into some of the finest outdoor education assets in Britain

The Trust, the largest of its kind in London, has inherited a service at the forefront of providing an integrated outdoor environmental education service to schools. A service that provides curriculum support, training for teachers and the provision of 5 outdoor Centres where children and young people from nursery to sixth form can undertake courses ranging from outdoor play, mini-beasts and pond dipping to teambuilding and A level geography and biology fieldwork

The Trust aims to extend the opportunities for outdoor learning not only within schools but within the workplace and the wider community.

  • We aim to work with schools, colleges and employers to use our outdoor facilities to promote emotional intelligence; developing self esteem, confidence, problem solving and team building skills
  • We to aim work with the community, using our facilities and skills in outdoor recreation to promote active and healthy citizens

To deliver that vision it is essential that we are innovative, striving for the highest quality and range of courses. We must maximise the potential of the Charity to be inclusive and accessible to our diverse, multicultural community. And we must invest in our facilities and buildings to make them modern and comfortable places to learn and live in.

The Centres the Trust manages are:

  • Ty’n y Berth Mountain Centre in Mid Wales
  • Townsend Outdoor Centre in Swanage
  • Margaret McMillan House in Kent
  • Horton Kirby Environmental Centre in Kent
  • The Environmental Curriculum Centre in Eltham
